In 1996, a two and a half mile asphalt path was
constructed along the north side of Cascade Rd. It runs west from the village to Hall St. and has been enormously popular to pedestrians, bicyclists and rollerbladers. The success of the path inspired a special election for construction of additional pathways, and in 1999 work was begun and nearly completed on five new paths.

The new system starts east of the Thornapple River on Thorncrest Dr., runs the length of Wycliffe then continues east on Cascade Rd. to 36th St. It then turns east on 36th St. and runs to Buttrick Ave. where it turns north and continues all the way to Grand River Dr. The new system which is entirely east of the river, is connected to the original path by the sidewalks in the village, creating a continuous path that is approximately eight and a half miles long.

The pathways are kept open during the winter months, primarily using plow trucks. A John Deere 6410 was purchased to remove snow from the new wooden bridges and boardwalks, clearing the snow from all the sidewalks throughout the village and to clear snow from the path at the Township Park. Pedestrians may occasionally encounter personnel operating these machines or their plow trucks on the pathways.

The pathways are maintained year-round, and the maintenance includes sweeping/debris removal, some mowing, asphalt repairs/replacement as needed, trash removal, maintenance of the Mutt-Mitt dispensers, snow plowing and removal. Motorized vehicles are not permitted, other than vehicles necessary to maintain the system.

The paths include a number of bridges over ravines, wetlands and creeks, as well as several attractive retaining walls along hillsides. All of the paths are marked with appropriate signage to warn pedestrians of road crossings, steep hills, sharp curves, etc., and there is trash receptacles located throughout for your convenience.
